Start with the foundation, not the flashy stuff
It's tempting to jump straight to graphics overhauls, but the mods that actually make the biggest difference to how the game plays are the boring, foundational ones. Get these installed and stable before adding anything visual.
Essential quality-of-life mods
- SkyUI, overhauls the entire inventory, magic, and menu system, widely considered close to mandatory by the modding community.
- Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch, an enormous community-maintained bug fix collection addressing hundreds of issues Bethesda never patched.
- Alternate Start, Live Another Life, skips the mandatory intro sequence and lets you choose your starting scenario directly.
Mods worth adding once the foundation is stable
From there, most modded playthroughs branch into a few common categories: graphical overhauls (textures, lighting, weather), gameplay overhauls (combat timing, AI behavior, survival mechanics), and content expansions (new quests, locations, and characters built by the community). Which specific mods fit depends heavily on your hardware and how much you want the base game changed versus just polished.
A load order warning worth taking seriously
Mod conflicts, not individual mods themselves, are what actually crash saves and corrupt playthroughs. Install mods a few at a time, test between batches, and use a mod manager rather than installing files manually, it will save you hours of troubleshooting later.
