What standing stones actually do
Standing stones replaced the birthsign system from earlier Elder Scrolls games. Interacting with one grants a passive bonus or ability, and only one stone's effect can be active at a time, though you're free to switch by visiting a different stone whenever you like, there's no permanent commitment.
The combat stones
- The Warrior, boosts one-handed, two-handed, archery, and block skill gain.
- The Lady, boosts health and stamina regeneration, a solid all-around defensive pick.
- The Steed, removes armor weight penalties and improves carry-focused traits.
The magic stones
- The Mage, boosts magicka regeneration.
- The Apprentice, boosts magicka regeneration further but increases magic damage taken, a high-risk pick.
- The Atronach, grants spell absorption and a larger magicka pool but removes natural magicka regeneration entirely.
- The Ritual, grants a once-per-day power to raise nearby dead as allies.
The stealth, social, and utility stones
- The Thief, boosts sneak, lockpicking, pickpocket, and speech gain.
- The Lover, boosts skill gain rate across the board temporarily after activation.
- The Lord, grants extra armor and magic resistance.
- The Shadow, grants a once-per-day invisibility power.
- The Tower, improves lockpicking and grants bonus gold when opening chests.
- The Serpent, paralyzes and poisons enemies once per day, a strong niche pick for tough single-target fights.
Picking the right one for your build
Match the stone to your race and playstyle rather than picking blind, a stealth archer built around a Bosmer or Khajiit gets far more value from The Thief than The Mage. If you haven't settled on a build yet, our best race for every build guide is worth reading first.
