Elder Scrolls 6 Release Date: What's Actually Confirmed vs. Rumor

Short answer: there isn't one yet. Here's what Bethesda has actually said, and why you should be skeptical of any specific date you see floating around.

The Elder Scrolls VI release date speculation

What Bethesda has actually confirmed

Nothing close to a date. Bethesda confirmed The Elder Scrolls VI exists with a brief teaser at E3 2018, and since then the studio's public comments have stayed deliberately vague. Todd Howard has repeatedly declined to give any kind of window in interviews, and Bethesda's official channels have made no release date announcement of any kind. Anything more specific than "it's in development" should be treated as speculation, no matter how confidently it's stated elsewhere.

Why the wait has stretched on this long

The short version: Starfield came first. Bethesda Game Studios runs one game at a time through its main development pipeline, and the studio has been open that Starfield, released in 2023, took priority while The Elder Scrolls VI sat in a smaller pre-production state. Full-scale production is understood to have ramped up meaningfully after Starfield shipped and its major expansions were underway. We go deeper on this in our piece on why Elder Scrolls 6 is taking so long.

A roundup of Elder Scrolls 6 rumors
Rumor roundups like this one have circulated for years, often recycling the same handful of unconfirmed claims.

The release windows people keep throwing around

You'll see specific years attached to The Elder Scrolls VI across YouTube titles, forum posts, and clickbait articles. None of them come from Bethesda. Most trace back to one of three things: general industry analyst guesswork based on typical Bethesda development cycles, extrapolation from Starfield's post-launch support timeline, or straightforward misreadings of old interview quotes taken out of context. Treat any headline that states a specific release year as a guess dressed up as news unless it links directly to an official Bethesda source.

The Elder Scrolls VI community hype and speculation
Community hype has stayed high for years on essentially no new information, which tells you a lot about how this franchise holds attention.

How to actually stay updated without getting misled

Follow Bethesda's own channels directly (bethesda.net and their official social accounts) rather than aggregator headlines. Major Xbox showcases are historically where Bethesda has made its biggest Elder Scrolls announcements, so those events are worth watching each year. And treat this Archive the same way, we'll keep this page and the main TES VI hub updated as real news breaks, but always double check anything time-sensitive against an official source before treating it as settled.

Waiting is easier with a full backlog. Catch up on the series while you wait.
